Compartment 25a Dockeney Wall Planning Application

Behind the Dockeney WallThe planning application for the works was submitted to the Broads Authority (via the Broads Authority) in April 2007. This is for flood defence works at Geldeston and Dockeney, the Dockeney Wall, adjacent to the left bank of the River Waveney.

The proposed flood defence works will both increase the crest height and width in order to strengthen the bank and allow grass cutting machinery to operate. In addition the side slopes to the wall will be made shallower for improved stability. All the building material is to be imported as the local materials are unsuitable.

Planning approval was granted in July 2007. Tree and scrub clearance was undertaken during winter 2007-2008. The defence works were completed in 2008. Survey work ahead of further works in the area is being conducted during 2009.

The 1.2km long Dockeney Wall defends over 30 residential properties along Station Road and Kells Way in Dockeney and Geldeston. The Dockeney Wall was constructed in 1980 as a retreated defence from that which previously ran along the edge of the river. Consequently this area of the Geldeston Marshes now acts as a floodplain allowing storage of water on the marshes during flood events. The floodplain is principally grassland used for grazing.
